article alleges that rich (i.e. government) africans are hunting albinos to use their body parts as good luck charms. who has jurisdiction over this, and who and how can make a profit combating this? will the us (clinton) at least offer asylum to albinos?
i found the article via an odd route - a link at marginal revolutions was supposed to be about chinese weddings at mcdonalds. hmm that link is working fine now.

Half of all humans who have ever lived, died from malaria.
mindblowing facts from reddit
no idea if it's true or not. snopes is skeptical but not sure.
“About half of all humans who have ever lived have died from malaria,” says Natalie Angier, the Pulitzer-winning science writer. OK, now I at least have a source.
Stuff to do, might follow up later. I tried googling the above quote, but only got three hits, including this blog post. Google is fast!
http://www.nytimes.com/1995/08/22/science/malaria-s-genetic-game-of-cloak-and-dagger.html?pagewanted=3
here's an article she wrote about malaria, but it doesn't have the quote.

the physics nobel prize has been awarded to a guy who noticed thin layers of pencil lead on scotch tape, stuff now called graphene. his earlier work, which got him the ignobel prize, concerned levitating frogs. speaking of frogs, i saw a guy at the cvlub with a shirt that said frogtape.com, so i googled it. it turns out that frogtape is like duct tape (ducktape) except it's green and has a scientific way of making nice clean lines when you use it for painting. dunno how much it costs.
update Gein is one of the few Nobel prize winners to have coauthored a paper pdf with a hamster, reports boingboing.

shows i'd never heard of: the good guys, 1968, with Bob Denver. don't know if there are episodes online.
Not to be confused with the good guys.

hadn't checked my stats in awhile. 50,000+ total hits for this blog, over about 5 years. 10,000 for my election law blog. 15,000 for a blog i tend to forget i have that's just some pictures, not linking to it because a few aren't work-safe.
i think i've made $17 from adsense, but i've forgotten how to log in and collect it.

I had some time to kill, so i went off in search of a new (to me) webcomic.
found it. http://concessioncomic.com
furry, violent, a bit snarky. like i said, i have time to kill.
oh and there's a movie.
One the characters is a pangolin, a scaly mammalian anteater. The scales are made of keratin, like fingernails.
Turns out I know even less of mammal taxonomy than I would have thought.

This,
of course, is a quoll, a dasyurus, a lesser cousin of the tasmanian devil. it's not in the comic, i was just looking at taxonomies.

This afternoon, President Obama spoke with President Alvaro Colom of Guatemala to express his deep regret regarding the study conducted by the U.S. Public Health Service in the 1940s on sexually transmitted disease inoculation and to extend an apology to all those affected.
The President reaffirmed the United States' unwavering commitment to ensure that all human medical studies conducted today meet exacting U.S. and international legal and ethical standards.
He also underscored the United States' deep respect for the people of Guatemala and the importance of our bilateral relationship.
