Last night my roommate took me to our town's art museum. I got to see a couple of the Turner pieces that I couldn't find last time I was there.

and the internet is telling me the IMA has a bunch more Turners back in the vaults somewhere.
I didnt see this one that the ima owns, for example.

The IMA also holds a large collection of works by J.M.W. Turner, containing highlights such as the 1820 watercolor, Rosslyn Castle.[6] The collection, which was formed by a substantial donation by philanthropist Kurt Pantzer in 1979, includes over fifty watercolors, as well as oil paintings, prints, and etchings.[41]

My interest in Turner was rekindled recently when i saw a BBC show about art detectives trying to authenticate 3 Turners in Wales that were thought to be fakes but they proved real. What I learned from the show is that while I know Turner for his seascapes, he also did indoor stuff, nudes and such, but these have been largely hidden away by Victorian prudes. I think there's a potential book there.
I'll try to find the show and add a link.
Found it. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01n39kg

grist for the constitution-in-exile crowd.
this is the second excerpt from this book i have read. i am mostly on the other side of the argument he makes here, but i think it is a useful discussion. i largely agree with his other article about voting rights.

i just missed steve buscemi's AMA today but he mentioned a new webseries he's doing.

The NYT has stolen Will Baude from the Washington Post.
http://www.capitalnewyork.com/article/media/2015/03/8564327/emnew-york-timesem-adding-20-online-opinion-writers.
(I once worked for the Times, but in a somewhat less exalted role: I was a paperboy, and not  very good one, as a teenager. I do thank the times for buying me my first glass of Tanqueray, which is still my drink of choice.)
Baude is apparently writing from exile somewhere. Not sure where, because I don't follow anyone on twitter.

more baudewatch:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/volokh-conspiracy/wp/2015/03/15/state-marijuana-legalization-and-the-necessary-and-proper-clause/
This is topical for me for two reasons. I was in Colorado Tuesday for an interview at Independence Institute with Rob Nadelman, who writes about constitutional theory including the necessary and proper clause. His neighborhood, just off Colfax in Denver, often smells as though the residents consider marijuana both necessary and proper.

If the Justices grant cert., look for them to invoke the obscure Rule 69(q), which would permit respondent Amy Imburgia to render her name in all-capital letters to offset DIRECTV’s distinct typographical advantage.

sometimes i can't tell when he's kidding.

Baude: I won’t say “trust me, you’ll like it,” because not all of you will. But I will say that if you read and liked Ender’s Game, any of the Miles Vorkosigan books, or The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss, I think you have a reasonably high likelihood of liking this too.
That's high praise for The Name of the Wind.

http://abovethelaw.com/, while i wasn't watching, has become a whole legal portal, and not just one guy's blog.

Thoughts on King v Burwell.
"states" has a plain meaning. there's discussion going on about federalism.
I think the burden on the states may be overstated.
If the court rules against Obamacare, there are several things than can happen.
Congress could act to fix it; this congress or a future one.
The states that had not set up their own exchanges could do so, or not, as they chose.
Some states might prefer to stay opted out. There is some pressure to opt in, but it remains a choice.
When ruling on legislation, where there is no constitutional obstacle, the court usually should go by what congress said, not what they meant, because such problems are fixable by congress, in theory.
The court need not be too troubled that -this- congress is unlikely to rush though a quick fix.
If the people don't like it, they can elect a new congress, particularly the house.
When congress chooses not to fix the problem, that suggests the court's reading was correct, or at least acceptable.

Google/Blogger retreat in censorship fight.

The change to Blogger's Adult Content policy announced

previously is not being implemented. Learn more here.

Google backs down.

An update on the Blogger porn content policy
This week, we announced a change to Blogger’s
porn policy stating that blogs that distributed sexually explicit images or graphic
nudity would be made private.
We’ve received lots of feedback about making a policy change that impacts longstanding blogs, and about the negative impact this could have on individuals who post sexually explicit content to express their identities.
We appreciate the feedback. Instead of making this change, we will be maintaining our existing policies.

http://www.travelchannel.com/shows/hotel-secrets-and-legends/video/pennsylvania-s-whiskey-rebels

I learned this week that an inn owned by my ancestor jean bonnet is where the 1791 whiskey rebellion started and ended, when Washington showed up there with 12,000 troops. Bonnet's daughter married Captain Peter Ankeny. My grandmother was an Ankeny.
The inn is still serving whiskey. http://www.Jeanbonnettavern.com.

23andme suggests I have an ancestor who was an Irish slave on Montserrat which is a British island south of Cuba. I wouldn't have guessed that one.
