6th circuit upholds $40 million verdict in one of the teflon poisoning cases against the dupont company. plaintiff got cancer tied to teflon ingredients which were in the water supply in west virginia.
DuPont no longer exists under that name, after a merger with Dow and a spinoff of Chemours.
My father was a research chemist for DuPont, and died of cancer in 1998 aged 69. There is reasonably good evidence his cancer was work-related.
He left his family well-provided for. My mother got a pension and health insurance until she died this year at 92. There are some trust funds the lawyers are still sorting out.
There have been two movies about this situation, one a documentary,"the devil we know", the other an eco-thriller "Dark Waters" starring Mark Ruffalo as the crusading lawyer who blew the whistle.
In this case, one plaintiff got 40 million. There are thousands of cases. This could significantly affect the finances of the company.
I should start tracking this story more closely.
