the monito del monte is a south american marsupial, the only living member of a group of south american marsupials that are the ancestors of australian marsupials.
he is a 'lazarus taxon', once considered extinct. til (today i learned) at reddit.
not to be confused with the mountain pygmy possum, another lazarus taxon.
