Beach umbrella sparks Occupy arrest in Indy
Tom LoBianco | Associated Press

INDIANAPOLIS – State police detained an anti-Wall Street protester outside the Indiana Statehouse after they said he refused to take down a beach umbrella.

Occupy Indy protester James Kerner was arrested Thursday morning and charged with criminal trespassing. State Police Spokesman Capt. David Bursten said Kerner was blocking a fire exit.

Protesters and police said it was their first arrest in the 3-week old movement. The Indianapolis protest has been far more subdued than violent clashes in Oakland earlier this week.

Protesters on the south lawn of the Statehouse said they urged Kerner to comply with police but they say he wanted to be arrested.

Bursten said he believes the move was designed to draw attention to the Indianapolis spin-off of the Occupy Wall Street movement.

although i personally am the 1%, i've been hanging out with the occupy indy and occupy st louis groups. went to a gathering last night responding to the above arrest.
