stuff i didn't know: the file names of abstruse good comic strips are themselves commentary, so now i will need to go back to the beginning and check the filenames, or not.

A CHEERY TAKE FROM MATT RIDLEY: The Rational Optimist: How Prosperity Evolves. “Life is getting better—and at an accelerating rate. Food availability, income, and life span are up; disease, child mortality, and violence are down — all across the globe. Though the world is far from perfect, necessities and luxuries alike are getting cheaper; population growth is slowing; Africa is following Asia out of poverty; the Internet, the mobile phone, and container shipping are enriching people’s lives as never before. The pessimists who dominate public discourse insist that we will soon reach a turning point and things will start to get worse. But they have been saying this for two hundred years. Prosperity comes from everybody working for everybody else. The habit of exchange and specialization—which started more than 100,000 years ago—has created a collective brain that sets human living standards on a rising trend. The mutual dependence, trust, and sharing that result are causes for hope, not despair.”

I am a bit freaked out that tyler cowan reads several books a day (while being professor, blogger, and dad.) One of those books recently was about hoarding, something i do.
A: People who hoard often have deficits in the way they process information. For example, they are often highly distractible and show symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. These symptoms make is difficult for them to concentrate on a task without being diverted by other things.
Most of us live our lives categorically. We put our possessions into categories and use those organizing systems to store and retrieve them easily. But categorization is difficult for people who hoard. Their lives seem to be organized visually and spatially. The electricity bill might go on the five-foot-high pile of papers in the living room, to keep it in sight as a reminder to pay the bill. Hoarders try to keep life organized by remembering where that bill is located. When they need to find it, they search their memory for the place it was last seen. Instead of relying on a system of categories, where one only has to remember where the entire group of objects is located, each object seems to have its own category. This makes finding things very difficult once a critical mass of possessions has been accumulated.

tyler cowen, cuter than i expected, wapo profile
i've been to one of the restaurants on his list, but i find i always get the same thing, the pumpkin eggplant spinach dish, with rice instead of naan, so if i'm in the dc area again i'll try a different place. last night i went out to a lesbian restaurant, had my usual dolmades and pita, then to a jazz bar, with a straight friend who was in town to hear a lecture from my ex-boss's uncle, the dalai lama.

free Marc Emery!
he's a friend of mine.
Canada Extradites Prince of Pot
VANCOUVER, British Columbia – The lawyer for Canada's so-called Prince of Pot says his client has been ordered extradited to the United States.
Marc Emery has sold millions of marijuana seeds around the world by mail over the past decade, drawing the attention of U.S. drug officials, who want him extradited to Seattle.
Marc Emery's lawyer, Kirk Tousaw, says Canada's federal justice minister signed off on his extradition Monday shortly after the marijuana advocate turned himself in to authorities.

Unfortunately, most of the packaged ramens use palm oil - if you google "palm oil orangutan" you'll find lots of references to how the palm oil industry is concentrated in the only habitats for orangutans, and is a serious threat to their existence. So check out the ingredients when you buy noodles, and pick one without palm oil.
That'll also encourage you to try lots of flavors of Asian noodle soups, at least if you've got Asian grocery stores around; I've been alternating between spicy Korean flavors and milder flavors which I can add lots of mushrooms and other veggies to, and cooking ramen takes about the same time as boiling an egg, so you can crack an egg into the pot to cook on top of the noodles.

Someone as clumsy as me shouldn't be cooking, and yet...
My most recent was my worst. I was baking mini pizzas on a comal (we lost our stone somewhere) and I absently grabbed a slightly damp towel like "hurr durr it's only two feet from the oven to the rack", which was plenty of time for it to bite me in the ass. It steam burned my palm, which turned into two blisters, and me being the dumbass I am, I dropped the whole caboodle in a panic and the sauce splattered on my legs, which sloughed off skin and caused blisters. Shit sucks. I got some cool scars though. I tell people I wrestled a shark.

Trial by battle is an article by an economist looking at how combat was used to settle land disputes in england for 100 years after the norman conquest.
http://www.peterleeson.com/Trial_by_Battle.pdf I skipped the math parts, but the history goes well with a book i've been trying to read, the constitutional history of england.
I liked the same author's earlier article on the economics of trial by ordeal.
Overall: the justice system has never worked especially well; it only needs to work better than nothing. The details have changed, but the arbitrary-ness continues.

10 ted talks for entrepreneurs. via marginal revolutions.
the first ted talk i saw was paul stamets on how mushrooms can save the world.
i found a bag of mulch that was being thrown away because it was infected with a fungus, what looks to me like oyster mushroom. so i spread it on my front flower bed and covered it with a little dirt and watered it, and about a month later today i noticed my first mushrooms.

The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince (커피프린스 1호점, or Coffee Prince) is a South Korean drama that began airing on July 2, 2007 in South Korea. It aired every Monday and Tuesday. It stars popular actress Yoon Eun Hye from Goong or Princess Hours, Gong Yoo from One Fine Day, Lee Sun Gyun from White Tower and Chae Jung Ahn. The drama is a love story between a tomboyish woman pretending to be a man and a young food empire mogul. It contains "pseudo-homosexual" elements as the man does not initially know of the tomboyish woman's true sex.

from n interminable vegan-anti-vegan thread at /ck/:

In the early day when chickens were fiercely at war with the Dodo, 250 troops was a fucking good thing.
The conscripts were born into a world of fire and brimstone, forced to battle before they even knew
the basics of CQC, peck by peck, wing to wing until one species prevailed as victorious.
As history tells us, the chicken obviously won, but to this day it continues to birth these vast quantities of poultry warriors
because war, war never changes.
