In 2015, the summer begins with the solstice on June 21 at 12:38 P.M. EDT. This year, Father's Day is also celebrated on the 21st!

I guess i'll need to find a bonfire to jump through or something.

What's your secret for being so positive all the time, Arnie??
[–]GovSchwarzenegger 2035 points x2
What do I have to be negative about?
If you're looking for more, my recipe: Do something you love - be passionate about your work. Take care of your body. Never stop learning and challenging yourself.
If you do those three things, you eliminate most complaints - about your job and your health. And you won't be bored. If you are always challenging yourself, you're always climbing the mountain, so there is nothing to be negative about because it is a work in progress. You can't be negative about unfinished business. I guess if there is a secret it is don't ever reach the peak. Always stay hungry.

word for the day: grexit.

[–]zannymb [S] 31 points
The question of whether Greece should stay inside the euro or leave is a tough one-and is the subject of our cover editorial this week. It is still my view that both Greece and the rest of the euro zone would be better off if they stayed in, but that will demand both more reform from the Greeks and debt reduction from the creditors. Grexit is not an easy solution. It will devastate the Greek economy in the short term; even in the longer run the gains from a big devaluation are easily exaggerated. Greece will only prosper if it frees up its still-rigid economy and overhauls its clientilist state, whether or not it is inside the euro.

notorious RBG

Around this time of year we grasp at straws.
Sign: “You Can’t Spell Truth Without Ruth.”
Next month the opera “Scalia/Ginsburg,” based on her relationship with her friend and antagonist Justice Antonin Scalia, will get its premiere. And she talked about an upcoming movie that will star Natalie Portman and focus on Ginsburg’s work as a crusading feminist lawyer.

I might have posted this shortly before Rick Hasen did.

http://allthingsliberty.com/2013/10/scotland-american-revolution/

Later this year, QEII will become the longest reigning british monarch, if you don't count the Old Pretender James III. That got me wondering if the American revolt in 1776 against the Hanover George III was really part of the ongoing Scottish struggle. The above article says it was more the other way around. That many redcoats were highlanders desperate for money, and most scots supported the idea of a unified Great Britain, seeing it as providing economic advantages, and were ok with the Hanovers in general because parliament was in charge, and the Scots had influence in parliament. More nuanced than that, read the article if you wish. My father's patronymic line had to leave Scotland because we are too closely related to Bonnie Prince Charlie, son of James III, a third cousin or so. It would have been death or slavery to stay. Robert the Covenanter is the one who came over, stopping in Ireland first. Before the 1745 defeat of Charlie, maybe 1680s or the 1715 rebellion. Balquhidder is our ancestral village. When my brother and I got our DNA tested, the results were about what you'd expect for somebody from Balquhidder, suggesting that either the ones we thought were our fathers were indeed our fathers, or at least some close relative rather than a total stranger. I digress.

I wound up at that link because of this article
http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/politics/2015/06/john_roberts_isn_t_a_reliable_conservative_vote_the_chief_justice_is_siding.html
that documents how Chief Justice Roberts voted against a death penalty prisoner who later turned out to be innocent. The scratches on his arms were from his cat, just like he said. By he I mean the prisoner, not Roberts.

Reason should hire paul levy to defend against the subpoenas.
I've never been much of a fan of the magazine, it's too GOP fr my tastes, I preferred Liberty magazine for example, but Nick Gillespie writes well and is a good editor.

reading now. last night i read http://boingboing.net/2015/05/22/the-man-who-sold-the-moon.html
a novella (2 hour reading time, unpaginated.) by cory doctorow. burning man on the moon.
i went to my third burning man event 2 weeks ago. just a small regional burn; i've never been to the main event at black rock city. my schedule on this study makes it look like i'll miss the rainbow gathering this year. we are 3 days in and they haven't even given us the schedule yet; it is a 2nd rate slipshod outfit somewhere on the east coast. the study was supposed to stat the 8th, it started the 1st instead. which is fine; the sooner it's done the sooner i get paid and can go on to something else, but i was hoping to get to rainbow this year, especially if, as rumored, it's in michigan this year.
