Indianapolis bans most new billboards and advertising type murals, but allows them where they advertise a business at the building the sign is on. The Bob & Tom show had to paint over a mural when there was a dispute about this.
A rhode island judge has found such a regulation unconstitutional. The opinion pdf has links to youtube videos and other aspects designed to make interesting reading.

word for the day: Omnificent
The Omnificent English Dictionary In Limerick Form http://www.oedilf.com
The flesh of the so-called "blood orange"
Is red, like my Da's kilt and... sporrange?
Oh my days, there's no rhyme!
I'm committing a crime!
Never mind. Rabbits live in a warrenge.

God Almighty: Creator of time,
And of space, and of life, and of slime
From which we then arose—
And we work. That fact shows
He's omnificent, great, and sublime.

Oh, i see I haven't attributed these quite right, should look more like this:
awkwardly by Jesse Frankovich
This everyday verse I'm submittin'
May never have virtues befittin'
The status "approved,"
And it might get removed,
Since it's awfully awkwardly written.
There are no paradoxes.

red state shenanigans: sending silly putty to a politician
i'm not a big fan of red state's actions alerts; they are usually wrong ideologically and tactically. but i like this one.

We've had several missions for the RedState Army of Activists. You probably haven't noticed as we've primarily directed them to individual states.
This should be one for an individual state, but we need to take this nationwide and make it a national rebuke.
Meet Kent Williams. He is allegedly a Republican in Tennessee. The GOP took the State House in Tennessee and rallied to one of their own to be Speaker.
Williams had other plans. He made a deal with the Democrats, betrayed the Republicans, and got himself elected Speaker. He then put a Democrat in the number two spot.
On opening day of the legislature the outgoing Democrat Speaker of the House stood behind Williams whispering directions in his ears.
It's clear he's a weak mind and will be putty in the hands of the Democrats.
Here's the assignment:
Kent Williams' address is 126 S. Main Street, Elizabethton, TN 37643.

Go here and send Kent Williams some silly putty. Let's put in his hands a pretty accurate representation of what he is.

notes to self: dead links: indylinks, alison, jay. add http://indianalawblog.com/.

"I ain't never seen no men-folks of no kind do no washin'." Tyler Cowen on the Appalachian quintuple negative and the word for the day, pleonasm. Pleonasms, if I understand what they are, are common in polynesian. Bora-bora, hula-hula, maki-maki. There's an interesting dialect which evolved on Pitcairn and is now on one other island which has a bunch of these.
The dialect is interesting because it exists only as a second language; everybody also speaks English. Pitcairn culture and ethnicity is a fusion of British and Polynesian.
There's also a pleonastic idiom on the chans' lolspeak, e.g., long cat is long.
Pleonasms involve redundancy, often for stylistic effect. Hot water heater, ink pen, ATM machine. Ah, wikipedia also lists ink pen... it's another use for the pleonasm (neoplasm), enhancing signal by duplication, since in Southern "pen" sounds like "pin".

Sun reports life on Mars, says Drudge. Methane in atmosphere would be from bacteria in soil.

I suspect that I have a squirrel in my attic. I live in a duplex, and one can go only go so long thinking the other guy is making strange noises. A squirrel would explain it.

A plethera .. a pleathera... too darn many biologists in Tenneessee?

RESPONDING TO A DEER SURPLUS: “For nine days in December, Knox County was one of the top deer-hunting destinations in the state. That’s just what biologists with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency were hoping.” Heck, I see ‘em in my neighborhood all the time. And wild turkeys. That was unheard of just a few years ago. Somebody tell David Baron. instapundit.
Aha, plethora. Let's call that the word for the day.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YLMo9RJNqtM A roommate christmas. Mildly amusing, about 5 minutes.
Currently reading Girls with Slingshots webcomic, thanks to Jeph.
I'm suppose to be sleeping because I have a deposition today.
Deposition went fine (but they won't email me a copy) and I've now read all the archives of girls with slingshots.

Marginal revolution points to a couple of best sf books of the year lists, which have some overlap. I've read Little Brother and Anathem, but I haven't read Sly Mongoose by Tobias Buckenell (liked by the instapundit) or Ian Banks, those are maybes for 2009 (stuff i will read if i happen to luck into used copies for example, or break down and use my library card.)
Currently reading Douglas MacArthur, Remininc..remi.. autobiography. Amazing story competently told. He comes from a long line of Arthur MacArthurs who were war heros.
By age 4 he was riding and shooting and chasing Geronimo. First in his class at west point, later commander there. I'm at the part leading up to WWII... I'm at the point where he's returned to the Philippines.
