How to buy, or rent, an island. Useful beginning tutorial. Does not cover how to buy an island country. http://www.smh.com.au/executive-style/luxury/how-to-buy-your-own-island-20120704-21grt.html also links to a site, caretaker.org, where a person might be able to get a gig looking after someone else's island for the 90% of the time when the owner isn't on site.

http://gutenberg.net.au/ebooks11/1100651h.html
what i'm reading: take it easy by damon runyon.
i don't think it's online but there's a link to another runyon storybook.
i have read one of these three books at that link, long ago.
they are mostly all the same.

I am in kalamazoo, and to get here i change buses in chicago, so i'm getting to know this one part of chicago, walking distance of union station. i was there on a sunday and there is a vestigal fragment of the old maxwell street market that shows up along jefferson and polk streets,
and i got the runyon and a tom swift and his aeroplane for $4 each from an old black guy with a couple of card tables of good books. most flea markets just put out books at random but this guy knew his merchandize and his market. most of the vendors there these days are hispanic.
as usual i dropped into the polk street pub for a bite. chicago is the only town where i like the sports bars. i was in chicago in 1986 to march to commentorate 100 years since the haymarket martyrs. they wrote a book about our parade, "mob action against the state" i still have a copy somewhere.
i stayed at maxwell street that time, when it was blocks of outdoor card tables selling everything, in the garment district. we were with the anarchist faction, and clashed a bit with the labor history guys, as well as the cops. i lived in colorado at the time and didnt get a very good sense of chicago geography in that one weekend, and i've never found the other neighborhood we stayed in, but it was nice to get a little taste of what maxwell street used to be. and the time before this trip, i figured out how to walk to chinatown from union station; it was on cermak but further east than i'd thought. cermak is named after  chicago mayor who got shot, but i forget who shot him. it's my bedtime now.

A few months ago I tried to buy a HUD house, and the deal fell through over a few hundred in closing costs. They accepted an offer for less than I'd offered, which I suspected but only proved recently. I was steamed about it at the time, because this was government property and they have fiduciary obligations to the taxpayers to take the highest offer.
But I have learned that the agent who was handling it got fired,
and I suppose I should be content with that.

My last offer had been $11,600, for a 4Br in a prety nice neighborhood near me. When I get back to indy in early August
I'll be closing on a 4Br for $7000. This is to replace my house that burned a year ago. I have a tentative offer on my current house, they are still working on getting pre-qualified from their bank. I don't usually put personal stuff on this blog. I guess it was a post about ethics that seg-wayed into what I'm up to lately.

I've been spending about 8 hours a day catching up my McIntyre project research, beginning to draft complaints although I'm not writing briefs yet. The plan is that, although Talley and McIntyre said that it's unconstitutional for states (or cities, or the FEC) to require a "paid for by _" disclaimer on political literature, pretty much all the states still do, except in a couple where the Attorneys general won't enforce it.

update: i'm liking this new story arc with glasses girl. (i forget if she has a name yet)
oh, today she gets named "May"

Where I'm staying the bandwith usually isn't good enough to get on blogger, except in the one corner where I can snag the next building's wifi. So few updates for a couple weeks.
I'm spending most of my free time here researching a potential case about the right to anonymous speech under state constitutions. say, that's not a terrible name for a law review article.

google and i aren't quite sure what a yardvark is. looks like a leafblower on a golf caddy dolly thing, whatever those are called.

snowden nominated for nobel peace prize.
while i support this nomination, i'd also like to be nominated, if there are any law professors reading this. they would probably be motivated by a desire to show that the nomination process is rather unselective, although to me my human rights work is important. few aadvarks have done so much for humanity. i'm offering a [bribe] donation of up to $100 to the charity of one's choice.

solar makes sense for banks - as PR.

a bank can install solar, break even doing it, and use that to promote loans for enregy retrofits.

note to self, develop elevator pitch on this topic, run it by tom carnahan.

occupaid

occupy oakland members get $1,170,000 to settle police riot case.

from my visits to several occupy sites while that was going on, it seemed like there was a lot of tort liability for police. this isn't the first time oakland has paid million dollar settlements for police riots.

is there a right to represent yourself before the supreme court?

i would think there is, although the court could deny oral argument.
